Vibrations at idling speed and in the seat
E36 / M44
Complaint:
Vibrations at idling speed with engine at operating temperature. This causes vibrations
which are particularly noticeable in the seat when the vehicle is stationary.
Cause:
Differing levels of residual gases in the individual cylinders at idling speed. This effect
occurs at irregular intervals and with differing intensity. As a rule, the effect diminishes in
the course of the engine's running-in phase.
Affected

E36/M44
Manufacturing period: Since start of series production
Remedy:
In the event of a customer complaint after the engine's running-in phase (approx. 5,000
km/3,000 miles), retard the valve timing of the intake camshaft by 6
°
(= 12
°
crankshaft) to
116
°
crank angle.
Procedure:
Adjust the valve timing of the camshafts accordingly.
Please refer to repair instructions 11 31 505.
Contrary to the instructions given in the repair instructions, the intake camshaft should be
adjusted to 116
°°°°
crank angle using special tool 11 9 110 (instead of special tool 11 3 241
on the intake side) .
Note:
-
The special tool can be ordered under part number 11 91 10/111 via the usual
part ordering channel from CARTOOL.

Changing the valve timing in this manner does not lead to any perceptible drop in
torque or output.
Reimbursement:
Material and labour costs incurred can be claimed through the usual warranty channels
subject to current warranty terms as follows:
