Airbag fault code 16/17 (MRS3): side airbag sensor
E36/7, E38, E39, E53
Complaint:
The airbag warning lamp is permanently active.
The following fault codes may be stored in the airbag control unit (MRS3) fault memory:
"16 - Sensor for side airbag left; encoding data does not agree with vehicle equipment"
"17 - Sensor for side airbag right; encoding data does not agree with vehicle equipment"
Cause:
Communication between the airbag control unit and the impact sensors for the side airbags
is affected by electromagnetic interference in the vehicle's electrical system.

E36/7; Manufacturing period: April 1999 until May 2000
E38, E39; Manufacturing period: March 1999 until April 2000
E53; Manufacturing period: April 2000
