Explanation: 
Within the framework of the OBD-2 systems checks legally required in the USA, the fuel
tank system is checked for leaks after each cold start 
(coolant temperature < 30 degrees Celsius).

On E36 vehicles with OBD-2, this is done by evacuating the fuel tank system through intake
pipe vacuum with the engine running and the pressure drop is measured via a tank
pressure sensor. If the values measured are not reliable, as is often the case in the filler
neck, the fuel tank system is assumed to have developed a leak. This leads to the above
fault codes being stored after the first start test and to the "Check engine" lamp lighting up
after the second.

Affected
vehicles:

E36 US with M44, M52 and S52
Manufacturing period: September 1995 (MY 96) until presumably 
March 1998 (proportionally MY 98)

Procedure:

1.

Customer information:
Do not refuel the vehicle with the engine running, not even to keep the vehicle's air
conditioner operating! This is prohibited worldwide due to the danger of fire.

Follow the correct procedure to refit the fuel filler cap properly - see the enclosed
Customer Information bulletin.

2.

Following any maintenance work, repairs or checks on the vehicle (incl. the delivery
inspection), the following procedure should be followed:

-

Interrogate the DME control unit fault memory.

-

If the fault codes 94 or 97 or 251 or 254 appear, the fuel filler cap must first be
checked for correct fitting and refitted properly if necessary.

If other faults are displayed besides those stated, these should be corrected.

-

Erase fault memory.

-

Perform the "Tank leak - system check" operational test with the DIS (from DIS
CD-ROM 12.0, available from 12/97).

3.

Attach the stickers to the fuel filler cap (part number 2 122 552, 
see Figure 3) and to the inside of the tank lid (part number 1 184 663, 
see Figure 4), to ensure that even drivers who do not receive this information directly
are aware of the above situation.

First ensure that the surface is free of oil and grease.
