Clean the inside of the transmission casing with a rag

Replace in any case the driveplate (but not the pressure plate).

Make absolutely sure that no grease, oil or other such similar lubricant
contaminates the lining of the driveplate and the friction surfaces on the flywheel
and the pressure plate.
7.
Before greasing, check whether the new driveplate can be displaced on the
transmission input shaft.
8.
Apply a thin and even coating of Microlube GL 261 (Part no.
81 22 9 407 436) to the splining of the transmission input shaft and the journal.

Note:
A modified grease (Microlube GL 261, BMW Part no. 83 23 9 407 943) is being
introduced at the end of 1996 and must be used once available.
9.
Refit the transmission,
see Repair Instructions 23 00 022

Note:
Do not leave the transmission hanging in the splining of the clutch.
10. Check the shift from neutral to 1st gear a number of times with the engine idling.
11. Replace the transmission only if the shift from neutral to 1st is not OK.
