Harsh 3rd - 2nd downshift under load
E34, E36, E39 with A4S 270/310R (THM-R1)
Complaint:
Harsh 3rd-2nd kickdown or 3rd-2nd downshift under full load.
This problem only becomes noticeable after the vehicle has covered a considerable
distance (mileage) and deteriorates at an increasing rate.
Note:
Refer to the Service Information bulletin with the same title in the case of complaint
concerning vehicles before production date 07/92.
Refer to SI 24 01 93 (616).
Cause:
Brake band wear over running period, brake band play too great.
On vehicles before production date 07/92, the solenoid valve for the brake band may be
defective.
Affected
vehicles:
E34, E36 and E39 with automatic transmission A4S 270/310R
(THM-R1 transmission)
Procedure:
For the customer, a low-cost repair procedure - readjusting brake band - has been
compiled for the problem of brake band wear. In case of complaint, the brake band should
be readjusted as described in the Repair Instructions.
Refer to Repair Instructions 24 24 001.
On vehicles before production date 07/92, it may be necessary to additionally replace the
solenoid valve for the brake band.

Set of seals/gaskets, large oil pan with
screws
PN 24 11 1 421 367
Solenoid valve brake band
(for vehicles before 07/92)
PN 24 33 1 422 093
Note on customer invoicing:
There is no additional expenditure for replacing the brake band solenoid valve and this
procedure is covered by the job number 24 24 001 "Adjusting brake band".
A separate claim for reimbursement must therefore not be made.
