Encoding C 40.0
Situation:
The programs and data for encoding have been revised and updated.
The new features are described in detail in the section headed "Procedure".
Control units relevant to encoding are listed in Enclosure 1.
Only the current CD/DVD version is valid for encoding control units. Control units may only
be encoded using the encoding data on this version. Older CD/DVD versions contain data
records which are no longer current and could cause malfunctions. For this reason, these
CD versions are no longer to be used.
Use the CIP program to encode the control units on series E6x and E8x vehicles. Please
comply with the notes in the current IDC "Programming, Encoding, Car & Key Memory
CIP".
Procedure:

Initial encoding
The scopes for encoding have been expanded and updated.
All control units relevant to encoding MUST be encoded after being installed in the vehicle.
If this encoding is not carried out after the installation of a new control unit, malfunctions
could occur.
Note: When encoding has been completed, programmed CKM settings in the encoded
control unit may be reset to the factory settings.

Enclosure 1.

Service measures
The scopes have been taken from the previous version C 39.0.

Retrofit
The scopes have been taken from the previous version C 39.0.
Retrofit of Telephone Business for the E39 has been revised.
Only those scopes given in the Electronic Parts Catalogue are approved for retrofitting.
A summary of possible encoding-relevant retrofits can be found in Enclosure 2.

Conversion
The scopes have been taken from the previous version C 39.0.
A summary of possible encoding-relevant conversions can be found in Enclosure 3.
Individual settings on E38 and E39 vehicles from production date 09/98 (Model Year 99)
and on E46, E52, E53 and R50/R53 vehicles must always be made using the Car & Key
Memory. In the case of a mechanical conversion (e.g. "Deactivation of airbags"), the path
"Conversion" is still to be used when encoding.

The encoding process cannot be interrupted once the operator has initiated it ("Start
