Ignition lock stiff / catches
E36
Situation:
Field observations have shown a degree of diagnostic unreliability with regard to the
steering column lock and its components. The result is that various components are often
replaced without reason, where only one single component is the source of the problem.
For example, a regular problem is that the ignition lock catches and is renewed complete
with lock barrel and ignition/starter switch.
In future, the warranty centre will reject steering column locks which are submitted with the
lock barrel installed as this cannot be removed without the key and thus cannot be tested.
Affected
vehicles:
E36
Manufacturing period: Start of series production up to May 1997
Action:
In case of complaint, only the ignition/starter switch is to be renewed.
Procedure:
Confirm customer complaint. In case of complaint, renew ignition/starter switch.
Please refer to Repair Instructions 61 31 020.
Note:
-
If the connecting shaft (to the ignition/starter switch) cannot be turned back to
the stop when the key is in position "0", the key will no longer be able to turn
at the next (intended) starting attempt.
-
New ignition/starter switches were introduced to series production in May
1997. These have a return spring which turns the shaft back to the "0"
position when the key is removed.
