Cold-start optimization
E34, E36 / M50 US
Complaint:
Long starting times on cold-starting the engine when ambient temperatures are between
approx. -3 and +7
°
C, sometimes in connection with dark exhaust smoke.
In isolated cases, the engine will not start at all.
Cause:
Great regional differences in fuel quality!
When fuels are used that contain too many low-boiling components and there is the
additional factor of temperature and altitude, the mixture fed to the engine is too rich.
The spark plugs become damp.
Affected vehicles:
E34, E36 /M50 with and without VANOS, US models
Manufacturing period: Sept. 90 - Jan. 96
Remedy:
If you receive a complaint from a customer, the DME control module must be updated to
the modified status with optimized mixture formation on starting. This is done by replacing
the EPROM and programming it.
Note:
The procedure described in this Service Information bulletin also applies to vehicles that
have already undergone measures to improve their cold-starting behavior at low ambient
temperatures (approx. -20
°°°°
C).

Procedure:
-
Use the diagnosis program to read out the DME fault memory. Eliminate any faults
which may exist. Delete the fault codes.
-
Load the MoDiC with the "Programming P9.0 US" program or a newer version using
the DIS or MoDiC station.
-
Connect the MoDiC to the diagnosis connector and switch on the ignition.
-
Select "Programming".
-
Enter the date.
-
Select "3 DME Programming".
-
Select "3 Replace EPROM".
-
Select "1 Identify EPROM".
-
Confirm the question "Is the old EPROM still installed in the control module?" by
pressing "Y"
-
Start automatic detection.
-
The MoDiC now displays the part number of the scope of delivery of the EPROM for
the control module. Only fit the EPROM from the given scope of delivery. If necessary,
you can print out a label with this part number via the DIS or MoDiC station.
