Use of EGR valve with leak-oil recirculation

E36, E38, E39 / M51

Situation: 

On all M51 diesel engines an EGR valve (E xhaust G as R ecirculation valve) with leak-oil
recirculation was introduced from March 1997. 

Instead of the vent hole in the vacuum unit of the EGR valve, a brass union was introduced
via which the leak oil of the EGR valve is recirculated through a hose line in the wheel
housing.

From this time on only EGR valves with drain connections are available as spare parts.

On M51 engines with EGR control, oil vapour may exit at the vent hole of the vacuum unit
in the case of minor leaks at the valve guide of the EGR valve. The resulting oil traces do
not impair the operability of the EGR valve in any way, however lead to customer
complaints.

Affected
vehicles:

E36 - 325td/tds, manufacturing period: from 01/96
E38 - 725tds, manufacturing period: from start of series production
E39 - 525tds, manufacturing period: from start of series production

Action: 

In the case of a customer complaint, the leak-oil line and its connection in the wheel
housing cover must be retrofitted when replacing the EGR valve.

Note:

On M41 and M51 engines manufactured before January 96, the leak-oil line may 
not  be retrofitted.

Reason:
M41 and M51 engines manufactured before 01/96 are not equipped with a
pressure control valve for crankcase ventilation in the cylinder head cover. Proper
operation of the leak-oil drainage system is only ensured with this pressure control
valve.

Procedure:

Replace EGR valve

-

Remove cover for intake manifold.

-

Unfasten exhaust recirculation pipe on EGR valve.

-

Unfasten hose from pressure pipe on EGR valve.

-

Pull vacuum line from electro-pneumatic pressure converter off diaphragm unit of EGR
valve.

-

Unfasten screw connection of EGR valve from intake air collector.

-

Replace EGR valve.

-

Check sealing ring between EGR valve and collector; replace if necessary.
