Humming noise and vibrations at 1 700 to
4 000 rpm
E36 / M52 ECE
Complaint:
On some E36 vehicles with an M52 engine, there have been complaints of humming noises
in conjunction with vibrations at the steering wheel at engine speeds between 1 700 and 4
000 rpm during acceleration and overrun.
Cause:
Since introduction of VDA power steering pump: Engine vibrations which are transferred via
the steering hydraulics.
Affected
vehicles:
E36/M52 ECE left-hand drive
Manufacturing period: 09/95 to 12/98
Remedy:
Run engine at speed complained about while varying the position of the pressure line
between the power steering pump and the steering gear by twisting it by hand.
Refer to illustration R32 0112 of Enclosure.
If the noises or the steering wheel vibrations change while doing this, carry out the following
actions:

Disconnect servo reservoir.

Install modified pressure line.

Mount additional pump bracket on crankcase.
