Stamping in vehicle identification number
(E36)
The vehicle identification number (VIN) must be stamped in
again if it has been removed during repairs.
Note:
Any possible incorrect stamping of the VI number at the
factory has been invalidated by a horizontal stroke in the form
of a milled cut through the incorrect VI number.
The valid VI number can then be found
in 4-door, touring and compact models:
in the water gutter.
in 2-door and convertible models:
below the incorrect stamp.
4-door, touring and compact models:
Assemble special tool 41 1 001 with adapter plate 41 1 004 in
such a way that the adapter plate faces the stamp guide.
Insert screws (2) without continuous thread from above.
Insert screws (1) with continuous thread from below.
Screw in screws just far enough to enable spacers to be inserted
later.
2-door and convertible models:
Assemble special tool 41 1 001 with adapter plate 41 1 005 in
such a way that the adapter plate faces the stamp guide.
Use M8x90 screws.
Insert screws (2) without continuous thread from above.
Insert screws (1) with continuous thread from below.
Screw in screws just far enough to enable spacers to be inserted
later.
