Start only possible after long wait, starter motor does not turn

E36 / S50 SMG

Complaint: 

After a long immobilisation period, the vehicle will only start after a delay. The starter motor
does not turn, the starter inhibitor is active.

Cause: 

Irregularities in the SMG hydraulic unit during pressure build-up.

Affected vehicles:

E36 M3 with sequential M-transmission (SMG) 
Manufacturing period: from the start of series production

Procedure:

In case of customer complaint, the following test steps should be performed to limit the
possible causes of the fault:

- 

Open the driver's door: The hydraulic pump in the SMG hydraulic unit must be heard
to start working.

If not, then:

1. 

Check the driver's door contact switch for correct operation (does the interior light
come on when the door is opened?). If OK then:

2. 

Possible cause in the connection "Plug connectors for gear recognition potentiometer".
Has Campaign 00230401/0698 been performed? (Affected vehicles: start of series
production until 7th April 1998).

Check the pressure reservoir (only when the above steps have all been performed):

1. 

Read off the fault memory with the DIS tester/MoDiC (perform short test) and correct
any stored faults in accordance with the test schedule.

2. 

To avoid undervoltage, connect up a battery charger. Ignition on. Engine off.

3. 

Check the following figures in the EGS using the DIS tester/MoDiC/expert
mode/diagnosis request:

-

Intake-air temperature (when the engine is cold, this should be the same as the
ambient temperature)

-

Hydraulic reservoir pressure

4. 

Monitor the hydraulic reservoir pressure with the DIS tester/MoDiC (specified value
with ignition on: between 60 and 80 bar).

Pull the relay off the hydraulic pump. The prepressurising pressure will slowly drop.
Change the gear setting two or three times so that the pressure drops more rapidly to
about 40 bar.

Then monitor the tester reading closely. From 40 bar, the prepressurising pressure
can drop to 0 bar very quickly.

Important: 

The prepressurising pressure immediately before the rapid fall in pressure must be
noted.

If this is greater than 35 bar (20

°

C), the hydraulic pressure reservoir is OK. In this

case, please contact your responsible Service department (subsidiary or importer).

If this pressure is less than or equal to 35 bar (20

°

C), the hydraulic pressure reservoir

must be replaced.
