Creaking bodywork
E36 Convertible
Complaint:
Creaking noises can be heard coming from near the A-pillar, from the bottom of the
windscreen or from the cowl panel as the bodywork twists.
Cause:
Tension in the individual metal components at the welding spots on the above bodywork
parts.
Remedy:
Since 01/95 modifications have been made to the bodyshell in production (additional
welding spots at the A-pillar).
Note:
However, due to manufacturing tolerances in the bodyshell, it is possible that this
complaint may still arise on new vehicles.
Procedure:
In the event of this complaint arising, please adopt the procedure described in Service
Information bulletin 41 01 94 (883).
SI 41 01 94 (883)
Should it prove impossible to eradicate the problem by these measures, the following action
may be taken on both sides of the vehicle, depending on the area affected:
-
Remove the door
-
Near the outside of the A-pillar,
tension the metal by tapping it with
a wooden wedge (arrowed in
figure)
-
In addition, remove the rear
retaining bolt of the front lid hinge
and spray cavity sealant into the
opening at an angle of 45
°
towards the A-pillar.
-
Remove the instrument panel trim
-
On the inside of the A-pillar,
tension the metal by tapping it with
a wooden wedge (arrowed in
figure)
