The selector lever is connected by a cable to a mechanical gearshift inhibitor. This gearshift inhibitor works directly
on the transmission selector shaft.
It prevents:
-
a forward gear being engaged when the selector lever is in position "R" and a fault is detected in, for example,
the control unit,
-
reverse gear from being engaged when the selector lever is in position "E",
-
a forward or reverse gear from being engaged when the selector lever is in position "0".
A change to the manual shift gate is made by moving the selector lever about 15
°
to the left from the "E" position.
The SMG control unit uses a microswitch to detect a change in selector lever position from the automatic to the
manual shift gate and vice versa.
The microswitch (item 1, Fig. 6) closes when the selector lever is moved into the manual shift gate.
A spring-loaded retainer holds the selector lever in the manual shift gate.
Upshifts and downshifts are made by tipping the lever to + or - from the spring-loaded central position (items 2 and 3,
Fig. 6).
In addition, the selector lever is fitted with a shift lock function. This prevents a gear from being engaged
unintentionally after the engine has been started.
The sift lock is an electromagnet (item 4, Fig. 5), which actuates a locking bolt. When no current is flowing, the shift
lock magnet displaces the locking bolt. This makes it engage in a hole in the selector lever (item 1, Fig. 5), thus
locking the lever, provided it is in position "0".
When the engine is started, the lock is not released until the brake pedal is depressed.
