Control unit for gear and program indicator
The control unit for gear and program indicator (item 4, Fig. 1) processes all data transmitted by the SMG
control unit via an I bus, such as program/mode, gear selected and selector lever position, and the following
possible fault messages, and transmits these to the gear and program indicator.

Fault in hydraulic unit

Transmission malfunction

Automatic mode

Undefined condition

System failure

No engine engagement
The control unit for gear and program indicator is installed in the A-pillar on the BMW M3.

The data/information processed in the control unit for gear and program indicator is displayed in the gear
and program indicator (item 3, Fig. 1).
The gear and program indicator is installed in the rev counter in place of the oil temperature gauge.
