Check engine idling speed and exhaust
contents (S50):
Requirements for all adjustments:
Engine at normal operating temperature (oil temperature > 60
°
C).
No malfunctions in engine or ignition system.
Connect up BMW SERVICE TEST or DIS.
1) Engine idle speed:
Check engine idle speed.
Caution!
If the TD signal on the diagnosis connector (Pin 1) is not
connected, special tool 12 7 040 must be used.

If nominal value is not achieved, refer to Electrical
Troubleshooting Manual for 3 Series E36.
Additional instructions, refer to point 3).
2) Exhaust test:
Insert exhaust sensor in exhaust tailpipe.
Check exhaust contents at idle speed.
Switch off exhaust extraction system for time of testing.
If nominal value is not reached, exhaust content can also be
measured on each cylinder,
refer to Technical Data 13 00
Additional instructions, refer to point 3).
If the exhaust idling speed values deviate from specified value:
interrogate the error memory of the Digital Engine Electronics.
If the Lambda oxygen sensor error memory is set to Lambda
regulation, troubleshooting must be continued using special tool
11 7 450 (Lambda oxygen sensor tester).
