"Check engine" lamp lights up after refuelling
E36 US from MY 96
Complaint:
After refuelling and two or more engine cold starts, the "Check engine" lamp lights up in
the instrument cluster.
The following fault codes are stored in the fault memory after just one cold start following
refuelling:
M52 with DME MS 41.1 and S52 with DME MS 41.2
BMW fault code: 251
Description: Tank leak detected - major leak
OBD-2 code: P 0442
BMW fault code: 254
Description: Tank leak detected - minor leak
OBD-2 code: P 0445
M44 with DME M5.1:
BMW fault code: 94
Description: Tank leak detected - major leak
OBD-2 code: P 0442
BMW fault code: 97
Description: Tank leak detected - minor leak
OBD-2 code: P 0445
Cause:
1.
Refuelling with the engine running.
2.
Major leak in the area of the fuel filler cap due to the fuel filler cap being incorrectly
positioned on the filler neck (e.g. "obliquely fitted")
- see Figure 1.

Leaking fuel filler cap due to insufficient sealing pressure at too small a closing angle.
The fuel filler cap is often not turned until it is heard to engage - see Figure 2, item B.
