Gearing noises in 1st and 2nd gears, whistling noises when changing between 2nd
and 3rd gears
Z3 with A4S 310R (THM-R1)
Complaint:
-
Gearing noises in 1st and 2nd gears in overrun or under light load.
The noise disappears from 3rd gear upwards
and/or
-
whistling noises when changing between 2nd and 3rd gears
Cause:
Gearing noises from the automatic transmission are fed to the body via the drive train -
propeller shaft, rear axle differential and rear axle carrier.
Affected
vehicles:
Z3 roadster, M44 and M52 with automatic transmission A4S 310R
(THM-R1 transmission)
Remedy:
-
Exchange the installed articulated washer at the joint "transmission output to propeller
shaft" with hole circle diameter 78 mm for articulated washer with hole circle diameter
96 mm.

Fit antidrone mats in the luggage compartment.
Procedure:
In case of customer complaint, the affected vehicle should be converted to an articulated
washer with hole circle diameter 96 mm. At the same time, antidrone mats should be
installed in the luggage compartment.
The precise procedure to be followed is described in the enclosed
work instructions.
Please refer to Repair Instructions 24 02 99 (424).
