Crankcase ventilation pipe damaged
E36/7 (Z3), E46, E39 / M52TU
Situation:
The crankcase ventilation pipe can be damaged at the bend by chemical attack due to the
formation of condensate from the acidic fuel and water mixture flowing through it.
The chemical attack can lead to the formation of holes, through which the engine draws in
secondary air.
This can lead to various problems:
•
Idling problems
•
Problems caused by a leaner mixture; it is possible that various fault memory entries
could be filed via the "lambda control"
•
The engine emergency program can be triggered
Note:
In the case of US models, this will result in activation of the "Service Engine Soon"
lamp.
Affected vehicles:
E36/7 (Z3), E46, E39 with M52TU and manufacturing period from November 1998 to
February 2000.
Procedure:
In the case of a customer complaint or on activation of the "Service Engine Soon" lamp with
the US models, a check must be made for damage to the crankcase ventilation return pipe
and, if required, it should be replaced by the more chemically resistant version.
Note:
For better accessibility of the return pipe:
•
Remove the cover from the injectors
•
Detach the manifold from the air intake elbow
Note on installation:
If the air intake elbow manifold is removed, the O-rings must be replaced.
