Leak in cylinder head in area of cylinder No. 1

E36/7, E38, E39, E46/M52TU

Situation:

Cylinder heads with manufacturing faults, i.e. that exhibit hairline cracks in the area of
cylinder No. 1, may be installed on the vehicles specified below.

Effect:

- 

Coolant loss at cylinder No. 1 on exhaust side in area of chain tensioner - see figure
below.

- 

Check message "Check coolant level"

- 

Engine temperature gauge shows increased temperature

Affected 
vehicles:

E36/7 (Z3), E38, E39, E46 each with M52TU engine 
Production period: From September 1999 to October 1999

Action:

It will be necessary to install a new cylinder head in the case of customer complaints
relating to this fault symptom. 

Procedure:

Replace cylinder head, replace valve stem seals - refer to Repair Instructions:

11 12 100 - Removing and installing/sealing cylinder head

11 12 503 - Disassembling and assembling the cylinder head
