Rattling noises from rear shock absorbers
E36/Z3 roadster/coupé
Complaint:
When driving over uneven surfaces, rattling noises can be heard from the area of the rear
shock absorbers.
Cause:
These noises can be traced to various causes in the area of the thrust bearing / thrust
bearing bolt connections.
1.
Bolt connections not made with self-locking nuts.
2.
Body contact surface for thrust bearing not level.
3.
Faulty thrust bearing.
Affected
vehicles:
E36/Z3
Manufacturing period: Start of series production to March 1999
Procedure:
In the event of a customer complaint, the following steps should be taken:
Remove both shock absorbers.
See Repair Instructions 33 52 000.
Check the contact surfaces of both thrust bearings on the body for unevenness:
If there are punch burrs
(position 1) or welding beads (position
2) in the area of the contact surface,
these must be removed. Treat the
worked areas with an anti-rust primer.
Counterhold shock absorber piston rod
(1) and loosen nut (2).
Remove joint seat (3) and thrust
bearing (4) from the shock absorber
piston rod.
Remove the seal (5) from the thrust
bearing (4).
