Checking wheel locating joint

E46, E53

Situation:

Besides examining vehicles to ensure that they meet all legal stipulations, it is the task of
technical inspection organisations to uncover any faults that are of relevance to safety or
the environment. BMW specialists have developed a special test procedure for checking
the roadworthiness of the wheel locating joint during regular, legally stipulated inspections.
This enables the technical inspection organisations to check the wheel locating joint without
using special tools. The method is described in precise detail in the technical inspection
organisations' test catalogues.

The testing procedure defined is only valid on the condition that the procedure agreed with
the technical inspection organisations is followed to the letter.

If this test produces a value that is outside the permissible tolerance, a test using the BMW
special tool would have produced the same result but at a much earlier stage.

Note:

E46:
With a single-link / spring-strut axle, this link simultaneously absorbs all transverse
and longitudinal forces. Because of the initial loading, no noise caused by wear
can be heard in customer operations.

This means that if a disturbing noise develops from the front end of the vehicle
while it is being driven, the cause is almost certainly not the link!

E53:
With a two-link spring-strut axle, the transverse and longitudinal forces are
absorbed by both links. Wear on the transverse link and/or tension strut (wheel-
side) is only rarely the cause of noises from the front end of the vehicle.

Note: 
Check links on stabiliser pendulum support!

Effect:

An objective measured result is essential for warranty and goodwill claims. This can only be
obtained with the BMW special tool 31 1 060 . Please refer to SWS 01 09 03 (992)

.

After examining with the special tool, document the test result on the claim.

Moreover, perform the associated service function as follows (available from Progman
V20.0):

Service functions > Front axle > Check wheel locating joint

In addition, the diagnosis report with the completed service function must be attached to the
warranty or goodwill claim.

Note:

The method, "indefinite shaking/buffeting" on the front wheel, which is frequently
but incorrectly employed, is not permissible as the complex axle geometry does
not allow the elasticity and tolerance that have been deliberately provided in the
design to be correctly evaluated.
