Subwoofer causes creaking and rattling noises

E46  coupé with harman/kardon HiFi loudspeaker system (option 674)

Complaint:

In audio mode, creaking and rattling noises can be heard from the area of the subwoofer.

Cause:

Conditioned by unfavourable installation tolerances on the subwoofer or crossmember,
annoying creaking or rattling noises can occur.

Affected
vehicles:

E46 coupé with harman/kardon HiFi loudspeaker system (option 674) - manufacturing
period: March 1999 until July 2001

Procedure:

In case of customer complaint, proceed as follows:

- 

Remove the subwoofer box.
Please refer to Repair Instructions "Removing and installing / replacing complete
subwoofer box for HiFi system",
RA 65 13 200.

- 

Glue a felt strip onto the crossmember in the area of each of the subwoofer's two front
clamp connections.

- 

Refit any parts that have been removed and check the effectiveness of the action.

Reimbursement:

Material and labour costs incurred can be claimed through the usual warranty channels
subject to current warranty terms.
