Motorola V3690 mobile phone from open market

E38, E39, E46, E53 with complete basic fittings for Motorola V3690 mobile phone (option
632)

Situation:

Complete basic fittings (option 632) for the Motorola V3690 mobile phone integrated into
the vehicle assembly have been available since June 2000 for Series E38, E39 and E46
and since September 2000 for Series E53. 

The Motorola V3690 mobile phone for which this is intended can be purchased either
through the BMW parts sales department or on the open market.

Units purchased on the open market are not compatible with the vehicle assembly. A
special BMW software is required to ensure compatibility with the vehicle assembly.

Units purchased through the BMW parts sales department are compatible with the vehicle
assembly.

Vehicles
concerned:

E38, E39, E46, E53 with complete basic fittings for Motorola V3690 mobile phone
(option 632) or basic equipment for installation of mobile phone (option 640) in
conjunction with a Motorola V3690 mobile phone purchased on the open market. 
Manufacturing period: 
E38, E39, E46 from June 2000; 
E53 from September 2000

Procedure:

Check the Motorola V3690 mobile phone and exchange if necessary.

Switch on the mobile phone:

- 

If the text message "BMW" appears in the startup display, the mobile phone has
been purchased through the BMW parts sales department. The mobile phone is
OK. No more actions need to be taken.

- 

If the text message "BMW" does not appear in the startup display, the mobile
phone has been purchased on the open market. Please continue with item 2.

Ask the customer to check that the mobile phone in question is indeed a model V3690
unit and not a model V3688 or V50 unit. In case of doubt, check the operating
instructions or invoice.

Make certain that it is not a SIM lock mobile phone. SIM lock mobile phones are sold
in conjunction with prepaid cards and are unable to be operated using a standard SIM
card for the agreed term of contract (as a rule 2 years). A mobile phone with activated
SIM lock cannot be programmed with BMW software. 
However, the customer may have his SIM lock mobile phone activated at his own
expense by his provider. 
SIM lock mobile phones can be identified as follows: 

Switch off the mobile phone. Open the battery tray and remove the battery. On mobile
phones with SIM lock, the label on the back of the unit is marked "S/L" on the right
next to the lower bar code (see Fig. 1). This marking is not present on mobile phones
without SIM lock.
