Oil level warning lamp malfunction
E46 / M43TU
Complaint:
The yellow engine oil level warning lamp lights up even though the oil level
is OK.
Cause:
Increased contact resistance at the plug connector between the engine wiring harness and
the oil level sensor, caused by ingress of moisture and corrosion at the contacts.
Affected
vehicles:
E46/4 with M43B19/87 kW
Manufacturing period: start of series production to June 1998
Remedy:
Visual inspection of contacts on the plug connector between the oil level sensor and the
engine wiring harness. If traces of moisture or corrosion are detected, replace the oil level
sensor and the connector .
Note:
Check whether the vehicle was affected by Technical Campaign
SI 00122601/1098 (retrofit cable ties) and whether this campaign was
carried out on the vehicle concerned. If this is not the case despite an earlier
customer notification, warranty rights are invalidated!
Procedure:
As per work instructions "Repairing a plug connector on the wiring harness using butt
connectors",
see also Repair Instructions 61 13.

Remove the front underbody protection.

Pull off the connector from the oil level sensor

Unfasten the cable clip from the retaining plate for the fuel hoses and remove from the
cable

Cut off the cable just behind the rubber grommet, pull off the protective hose

Cut the wires to length to match the repair kit (grey/blue 20 mm,
black 40 mm) and strip

Slide on a 140 mm insulator hose and shrink-fit hoses
-
Carefully crimp the butt connectors, seal with shrink-fit hoses and slide on insulator
hose

Plug the cable holder provided to the cast rib on the crankcase below the starter motor
(see illustration)

Press the cable clip into the retainer plate for fuel hoses

Loop off excess cable length and secure in the cable holder on the crankcase (see
illustration)
