Sport seat causes cracking noises
E46
Complaint:
Sport seat causes cracking noises when corning or on load change.
Cause:
The seat cushion shell has a small amount of play on the side seat inclination adjustment
mechanism.
Affected
vehicles:
E46 with option 481 (sports seats with electric and mechanical adjustment)
Manufacturing period: start of series production until September 2001
Remedy:
An O-ring must be fitted on both sides between the side section of the seat cushion shell
and the bearing point of the inclination adjustment.
Procedure:
1.
Move the seat to the rearmost fore/aft setting to ensure that there is sufficient space in
the footwell.
2.
Move the seat height adjustment to the uppermost position.
3.
Lever the seat inclination adjustment to the uppermost position.
4.
Remove the bolt for the seat inclination adjustment shaft on both sides (see Fig. 1).

An O-ring (1.8 x 8.0) must be fitted on both sides between the side section of the
seat cushion shell and the bearing point. To do this, bend the side sections out slightly
with a screwdriver (see Fig. 2).
