3 Series E46 316i (N40) SAL
In event of heavy oil carbon residue:
Carefully remove oil carbon residue from cylinder wall.
Important!
When removing and installing pistons, make sure the spray
nozzles (1) for piston cooling are not incorrectly adjusted
(risk of damage).
Release conrod bolts (1).
Remove conrod bearing cap (2).
Important!
Two conrod versions are fitted.
Conrod bolt (1) new version M8 (E10 A/F).
Conrod bolt (2) old version M9 (E12 A/F).
Small conrod eye (3) new version without oil hole.
Small conrod eye (4) old version with oil hole.
New conrod version can be recognised by the reinforcement in the
shank area (5)
RA Removing and installing/replacing all pistons (N40 / N42 / N45 / N46)
