Fewer versions due to uniform concept for
•
Left-hand drive and right-hand drive
•
Manual transmission and automatic transmission
-
Further improvement in response characteristics with faster operational readiness
-
Exhaust emission regulations EURO 4 satisfied even without secondary air system
-
Engine variant N46B20oL (upper power stage) with "4 in 2 in 1 exhaust system" with 2 catalytic converters and
4 oxygen sensors with optimised exhaust-gas back-pressure
-
Low-cost "4 in 1 exhaust system" with one catalytic converter and 2 emission sensors for N46B20uL (lower
power stage) and N45B16
The system overview shows all versions, depending on model series and engine.

Brief description of components
-
Oxygen sensors
Depending on the exhaust system, different oxygen sensors may be fitted.
Broadband oxygen sensors (Bosch type LSU4.2) are used on the N42 and N46 as control sensors upstream of
the catalytic converter.
Jump sensors (LSH25 or NTK FLO) are used on the N40 and N45 on the N42 and N46 as monitor sensors.
On the N40 and N45, jump sensors (LSF4.2 and NTK FLO) are also as control sensors used upstream of the
catalytic converter.
-
Catalytic converter
The catalytic converter reduces pollutant emissions:
•
Carbon monoxide (CO) is fused with oxygen (O
2
) to form carbon dioxide (CO
2
).
•
Hydrocarbons (HC) are fused with oxygen (O
2
) to form carbon dioxide (CO
2
) and water (H
2
O).
•
Nitric oxides (NO
x
) are converted into nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O
2
).
-
DME control unit
The digital engine electronics (DME) continually regulates the fuel-air mixture with respect to the following
criteria:
•
Exhaust emissions
•
Fuel consumption
•
Power development
•
Catalytic-converter protection
To do this, the DME registers the oxygen level in the exhaust from the oxygen sensors and corrects the injection
rate according to this data.
The ME9.2 serves only the so-called "mono-exhaust systems" on the N40 and N45. The "mono-exhaust system"
works with just one jump sensor upstream of the catalytic converter and one downstream.
The ME9.2 with external Valvetronic control unit (N42) and the MEV9.2 with Valvetronic actuation integrated into
the DME control unit (N46) has:
•
Interfaces for 2 constant control sensors upstream of the catalytic converter
•
Interfaces for 2 monitor sensors (jump sensors) downstream of the catalytic converter
