3 Series E46 316i (N42) SAL
Rotate eccentric shaft (1) at hexagon so that toothing (2) points
to inlet side as shown in illustration.
Note:
Cylinder head bolts on inlet side are only accessible in this
position.
Release screws (1) between engine block and cylinder head.
Note:
Only by removing the plug (1) can you gain access to the cylinder
head bolt underneath.
Open plug (1).
Note:
Cylinder head bolts 1 to 6 have an M10 thread with an
E12 bolt head.
Cylinder head bolts 7 to 10 have an M8 thread with an
E10 bolt head. Cylinder head bolt 10 is shorter than the others.
Because of the unfavorable position of the exhaust camshaft,
cylinder head bolt 10 is only accessible with an E10 socket with
1/4" drive.
Release cylinder head bolts from outside to inside in sequence 10
to 1.
Lift off cylinder head.
