Introduction
The exhaust systems for the new generation of 4-cylinder spark-ignition engine (= NG4) have been subject to
continual development since the start of series production in 03/2001.
The concepts have been adapted to each individual model series.
With the N42B18, the first generation of 4-cylinder spark-ignition engine with Valvetronic was introduced in early 2001
on the E46 Compact.
Here, a Y-shaped exhaust system was specially developed, comprising 2 primary catalytic converters close to the
engine and 1 main catalytic converter. This exhaust system, together with a secondary air system, achieved exhaust
emission regulations D4 or EURO 3.
From 12/2002, this exhaust system was superseded on the E46 LHD with manual transmission by a concept with air-
gap-insulated front intake pipes.
This exhaust system has the following benefits:
-
Faster operational readiness due to better and faster response of the catalytic converter and thus satisfying
exhaust emission regulations EURO 4
-
Lower exhaust-gas back-pressure
-
Reduced manufacturing costs due to lack of primary catalytic converters and a closed-loop Lambda control
system with 2 oxygen sensors instead of 4
With the introduction of the model series E87 and E90, exhaust systems with catalytic converters close to the engine
were developed.
This allowed further advantages to be exploited:
