BMW emblem comes loose from fresh air intake hood

E46 / M47

Complaint: 

On the vehicles mentioned above, it is possible for the BMW emblem to come loose from
the fresh air intake hood. Attempts to refit the BMW emblem using commercially available
glues will not be successful due to the lack of adhesion of the BMW emblem.

Cause: 

Silicon residue on the BMW emblem from production prevent reliable cementing.

Affected
vehicles:

E46 with M47 
Manufacturing period: start of series production up to September 1999

Remedy: 

The manufacturing processes will be revised from September 1999 to prevent the above
complaint from occurring. 
In case of customer complaint, the loose emblem is to be replaced with a new emblem
employing special adhesive tape, or the fresh air intake hood is to be replaced.

Procedure:

Loosen the adhesive foil from the BMW emblem and attach the emblem to the fresh air
intake hood at the place proved using the old glue. 
However, this is only permissible if the area of the old glue is about 35 mm.

The cementing surface must be clean of grease and dust.

If there are only two adhesives beads remaining of the old glue, the fresh air intake hood
must be replaced. It is not advisable to glue on a new emblem as the available cementing
surface is too small to provide for adequate adhesion.
