Balancing of propeller shaft to final drive
1. Determining cause (diagnosis)
1.1 Take car on a test drive and approach the speed ranges (80 - 120 km/h and 140 km/h upwards) at which the
vibrations or humming noises were reported by the customer.
If the complaint can be identified (justified) and the wheels can be excluded as the cause, we recommend the
following procedure:
1.2 Accelerate the car in drive position "D" in 4th gear through the speed ranges complained about by the customer
and then allow the car to coast from high speed in selector lever position "N" and with the engine idling through the
queried speed ranges in order to exclude influences from the engine and transmission.
Relevant complaints can be: humming, droning, vibrations especially in rear.
Then approach critical speed ranges in selector lever position "D" in 4th gear again and note down engine rpm. In
so doing, after engaging drive position "D", it is essential to wait for frictional connection before throttling.
If the fault occurs during both coasting and accelerating, initiate the following measures:
1.3 Raise the car in question. A 4-post lifting platform or a working pit are the most suitable apparatus for this.
1.4 In order to exclude torsional stress on the drivetrain, you must first check the longitudinal displacement of the
engine-transmission combination by means of the sliding section of the propeller shaft.
To do so, use a suitable lever to force the engine-transmission combination approx. 3 - 5 mm forwards. Attach
the lever to the head of a retaining screw on the transmission extension housing. When released, the engine-
transmission combination must swing back to its initial position. If this is not the case, release the sliding section of
the propeller shaft and then tighten to 10 Nm. Check the displacement of the engine-transmission combination
again.
