M54 RHD - Exhaust manifold gasket with heat shield
E36, E39, E46 / M54
Situation:
On RHD vehicles, buzzing noises can occur in the range 1000 - 1200 rpm.
These buzzing noises are caused by the exhaust manifold gasket with heat shield making
contact with adjacent components.
Affected vehicles:
E36/7, E39, E46 with M54 engine and RHD
Manufacturing period: start of series up to and including 04/2002
Procedure:
In case of customer complaint, both exhaust manifold gaskets with heat shield must be
replaced with the modified version with damping pieces.
- Remove the exhaust manifold, as described in repair instructions 11 62 140.
- Remove lower section of steering spindle, please refer to repair instructions 32 31 070.
- On vehicles with reinforcement plate (E46 coupé from 11/99, E46 convertible from start of
series production and all E46 from 12/2000 except 4-wheel drive), comply with notes in
repair instructions 51 71 374.
- Insert damping pieces in existing holes (please refer to Figs. 1 and 2), making sure the
damping pieces are correctly located.

Important!
As the damping pieces are smaller in diameter than the holes in the cylinder head
