Sequential M-transmission - clutch does not engage

E46/M3 with sequential M-transmission

Complaint:

Engine starts, gear can be engaged, vehicle pulls away and the gear indicator "R" or "1"
flashes; 
or: 
Engine starts, gear can be engaged but clutch does not engage. 
The vehicle does not move and the gear indicator "R" or "1" flashes.

Cause:

The status "bonnet closed" is not recognised by the transmission control unit because one
or both microswitches on the lower section of the bonnet lock has failed:

If one of the microswitches on the lower section of the bonnet lock has failed, it is
possible to start up and drive off, but the gear indicator "R" or "1" will flash. 
Alternatively:

-

If both microswitches on the lower section of the bonnet lock have failed, it is possible
to start, but not to drive (electric-hydraulic clutch does not engage) and the gear
indicator "R" or "1" flashes.

The microswitch failure could be caused by either preliminary damage during assembly or
by incorrect adjustment. Another possible cause is incorrect handing when operating the
microswitch during a visit to the workshop.

Affected
vehicles:

E46/M3 with option 793 (sequential M-transmission) 
Manufacturing period: 10/2000 until 07/2002

Remedy:

In case of customer complaint, check both microswitches in the lower section of the bonnet
lock using the DIS tester and replace them as necessary. 
In the factory, the installation process has been modified from 07/2002 so that preliminary
damage can no longer occur on the switching element of the microswitch.

Procedure:

In the workshop, care should be taken to ensure that no tools are pushed into the bonnet
lock during assembly work. The switching element on the microswitch could be damaged or
bent (see illustrations below).
