Muffled knock from the area of the rear axle during load reversal
E46 323iA and 328iA with A5S360R (GM5)
Complaint:
A muffled knock (noise) from the area of the rear axle immediately after a load reversal.
The complaint occurs most commonly when the engine is at its normal operating
temperature.
Cause:
Excessive axial clearance between the transmission output shaft and the transmission
output flange.
Affected
vehicles:
323iA and 328iA with automatic transmission A5S360R (GM5) up to transmission serial
number 7911.
Manufacturing period: start of series production until August 1998.
Remedy:
New transmission output flange with spring washer.
Note:
Transmission output flanges with white color marking all way round have already been
converted and need not be reworked.
The output flange with spring washer has been introduced into series production at
the supplier with effect of transmission serial number 7912 and does not have a white
color marking. The transmission serial number can be found on the transmission data
plate.
Procedure:
In case of customer complaint, localize the noise as follows by carrying out a test drive:
With the engine at its normal operating temperature, accelerate the vehicle to a speed of 30
to 40 km/h (20 - 25 mph) and then initiate overrun, i.e. suddenly release the accelerator
pedal. If a muffled knock can be heard from the area of the rear axle immediately after the
transition to overrun, the cause described above applies.
Replace the transmission output flange with the new version with spring washer, as
described in the repair instructions.
