Disturbing noise in the vicinity of the door speaker

E46 coupé, convertible

Complaint:

The woofers in the doors can sound distorted when playing music with strong bass
emphasis. This effect may be particularly noticeable in connection with SA 0674 harman
kardon HiFi speaker system.

Cause:

The woofer can excite the sound insulation and door trim panel to vibrate with the music.

Affected vehicles:

E46 coupé and convertible
Manufacturing period: from 09/01 to 02/02

Remedy:

In case of customer complaint, foam material mouldings should be adhered to the door trim
panel and sound insulation elements.

Procedure:

Remove door trim panels on driver and passenger's side as described in Repair
Instructions 51 41 000.

Adhere foam material moulding 1 (50 mm x 50 mm x 15 mm) on to crash pad 2 in
the door trim panel as shown in Fig. 1.

Adhere foam material moulding 3 (100 mm x 50 mm x 15 mm) on to sound
insulation as shown in Fig. 2.

Adhere foam material moulding 4 (100 mm x 50 mm x 20 mm) on to sound
insulation as shown in Fig. 2.
