Update of wheel/tyre combinations
All models of MY 1999
Situation:
This information bulletin contains the wheel/tyre combinations which have been tested and
approved by BMW AG for BMW vehicles of Model Year 1999 for all countries (maximum
scope). Restrictions for specific national markets are listed as footnotes below the tables.
Tables also include approved summer tyres, recommended winter tyres,
an overview of wheel designs and BMW snow chains.
See Enclosures to this Service Information bulletin.
Restrictions in speed classes and in availability of tyres makes may be possible in certain
countries.
It is not possible to transfer the steel wheel 6.5J x 15 with IS = 47 mm from the E36 to
the E46. The wheel's load bearing capacity is insufficient.
Procedure:
When ordering tyres, make sure that tyre designations are quoted in full (including any
suffixes such as "*", for instance).
The vehicle title document does not list all of the technically feasible wheel/tyre
combinations. When retrofitting different wheels and/or tyres, please ensure that the size
specifications in question are added to the title document by the relevant authority if they
are not already listed.
When retrofitting wheel/tyre combinations to an E36, that are not fitted as standard at the
factory, please comply with the conditions and information described in detail in Service
Information bulletin 36 01 97 (175).
See Service Information bulletin 36 01 97 (175)
When fitting winter tyres, a sticker should be attached within the driver's field of vision
indicating the tyres' maximum speed limit if this is below the car's maximum possible speed
(do not forget to take any specific national regulations into account).
As far as tyre designations are concerned, higher load ratings or higher speeds are
permitted according to ECE guideline R 30
(e.g. 185/65 R 15 88 V instead of 185/65 R 15 87 H).
Wheel/tyre sizes not listed, e.g. those available from non-BMW accessories dealers, are
not approved by the manufacturer. Moreover, the suspension settings necessary for these
sizes do not exist. For this reason, drivers are expressly advised against fitting any such
wheels/tyres. BMW sales personnel must make this sufficiently clear to customers.
Workshops which fit BMW cars with wheel/tyre sizes or snow chains not approved by the
manufacturer are exclusively and in all circumstances responsible for the consequences.
