Vibrations/humming noises in engine speed range of 1300 to 2100 rpm

E46 / 330dA, 330XdAE39 / 530dAE53 / X5 3.0dA

Complaint:

1. 

(530dA and X5 3.0dA) 
Strong vibrations (washboard effect) and/or loud humming noise in 4th and 5th gear in
engine speed range of 1300 to 2000 rpm when driving under light load, especially in
5th gear in road speed range of 100 to 130 km/h.

2. 

(330dA and 330XdA)

-

Humming noises/vibrations in 4th and/or in 5th gear during constant-speed travel
or under a light load in engine speed range of 1600 to 2100 rpm.

-

Brief humming noise when the converter clutch starts to operate and/or when the
converter clutch ceases to operate at approximately 1700 rpm in 5th gear.

Cause:

In case of complaint 1:

a)

530dA 
(Manufacturing period June 1999 to August 2000) 
Coefficient of friction deterioration on the friction plate of the converter clutch

b)

530dA 
(Manufacturing period September 2000 to August 2003) 
Transmission tuning

In case of complaint 2:

330dA and 330XdA

Action:

In case of complaint 1:

a)

530dA 
(Manufacturing period June 1999 to August 2000) 
Replace torque converter, oil screen and renew drained off transmission fluid.

Note: On vehicles with transmission with transmission code VT, the current
transmission data status C5737 must also be programmed.

b)

530dA 
(Manufacturing period September 2000 to August 2003)
