AM interference when brakes are applied
E46 convertible
Complaint:
Reception interference occurs in the AM range when the brake pedal is pressed.
Cause:
The tailgate has inadequate ground connection. This leads to interference from the third
brake light being transmitted via the tailgate to the aerial.
Affected
vehicles:
E46 convertible
Manufacturing period: from start of series production to 20th October 2000
Remedy:
In series production, an additional ground strap has been fitted to the tailgate since 20th
October 2000.
In case of customer complaint, fit a separate wire from the inside of the tailgate to the
ground strap of the right-hand reversing light.
Procedure:
1.
Remove the tailgate cover.
2.
Drill a hole of 3 mm diameter in the inside of the tailgate in the area of the right-hand
reversing light. Use a drill stop to prevent damage to the outside of the tailgate.
3.
Fit a cable terminal to one of the wires with a cross-section of 0.75 mm and 10 cm
length.
4.
Secure the wire to the hole in the tailgate with a thin-metal self-tapping screw.
5.
Remove the insulating tape from the wiring harness section leading to the right-hand
reversing light.
6.
Separate the ground strap of the right-hand reversing light at a distance of approx. 10
cm from the right-hand reversing light.
7.
Connect the cable from the inside of the tailgate and the two ends of the separated
ground strap together using a butt connector and shrinkable PVC hose.
