Situation:
Chip tuning for BMW diesel engines is being offered to an ever increasing degree in the
trade press. This is an increase in power output and torque brought about by manipulating
the engine management system.
Such interference, usually no more than an increase in the volume of fuel injected, either by
editing the data record in the DDE control unit or by faking the actuation signal for the
injection pump actuator.
Modern BMW diesel engines are designed to guarantee a high degree of reliability and
durability, despite the high power density. To achieve this, a number of DDE monitoring
functions reliably prevent, amongst other things, the maximum load from being exceeded.
Chip tuning neutralises these self-protect function in the DDE. The result is that the
durability of the diesel engines is significantly reduced. As the drive train is designed for a
specific torque, additional damage can also occur to manual and automatic transmissions
and the final drive units.
It cannot be ruled out that tuned vehicles exceed legally stipulated emissions limits,
especially exhaust opacity at full load.
If the increase in power output is not documented with a corresponding entry in the
vehicle's registration document, the vehicle's operating permit is invalidated.
As for any tuning issue, BMW AG is unable to accept any warranty or goodwill liability
whatsoever for damage to the engine or other components resulting from chip tuning.

Note:
In principle, the same thing also applies to spark-ignition engines and for all other tuning
issues.
Procedure:
Please make sure that this information reaches all members of staff in the service and
sales departments.
The customers of diesel vehicles should be informed about the situation described above
during sales discussions and if any interest is shown.

Warranty and goodwill claims should be rejected immediately if there is any suspicion of
chip tuning.
If tuning is performed despite these warnings, this information, together with the vehicle
identification number and the extent of tuning should be sent to BMW AG, Dept. VS-31 or
VS-13 for the German market.
