Auto Start Stop function
E81, E87, E90, E91, E92, E93, R56
Situation:
As a "BMW EfficientDynamics" measure, the Auto Start Stop function (development
designation: Automatic Engine Start Stop, MSA) helps to reduce fuel consumption CO
2
emissions. The engine is switched off when the car halts e.g. at traffic lights, by engaging
neutral and disengaging the clutch. To restart it, it is sufficient to operate the clutch pedal.
Affected vehicles:
E-model series E8x, E9x, R5x
Manufacturing period: vehicles from March 2007 in conjunction with manual transmission
and 4-cylinder engines N12, N14, N43, N47, W16.
Note:
The Auto Start Stop function is standard equipment on these vehicles.
Procedure:
Sequence of functions for ASSF (Auto Start Stop function)
Engine stop
The driver brakes the vehicle to a
standstill (e.g. at traffic lights).
The driver engages neutral and
releases the clutch.
