Situation:
A battery master switch is a switch which is not permanently installed and which contributes
significantly to the retention of the quality of the vehicle battery up to delivery to the
customer.
It serves as a simple way to interrupt the off-load current for electronic components on
vehicles which are not in use (being transported, in storage). This increases the obligatory
interval between battery recharging from 6 to 12 weeks.
Vehicles that will have a long transport route or those for which longer storage times are
envisaged (store vehicles), are equipped with this factory-fitted battery master switch.
Model series E53 and E83 vehicles are equipped with a mechanical battery master switch
.Please refer to SI 61 02 98 (313)
Model series E6x, E9x, E87 and E70 vehicles with battery in the luggage compartment are
equipped with an electronic battery master switch.
For list of parts for the electronic battery master switch,
please refer to Enclosure 1.
Affected vehicles:
E60, E61, E63, E64, M5, M6
E87,
E90, E91, E92, E70
Procedure:
Important:
Switch the electronic battery master switch off again whenever the vehicle has been moved
(e.g. manoeuvred in the warehouse).
The battery circuit must always be open on compound vehicles. This is a precondition for
the lengthened
12-week recharging interval.
Switching the electronic battery master switch on and off
Please refer to Enclosure 2.
The battery master switch must be removed before the vehicle is delivered to the customer
and before it is taken for a test drive on public highways.
Removing the electronic battery master switch
Please refer to Enclosure 3.
Note:
Vehicles with an electronic battery master switch fitted may be moved briefly by
instructed personnel for transport purposes, including on public roads (in
conjunction with market-specific temporary licence plates).
Clear the fault memory after removing the battery master switch as part of the pre-delivery
check.
