Special tools for RHT (Retractable Hard Top)
E93
Situation:
An RHT is fitted for the first time on the E93. The most important service-relevant
differences to conventional soft tops are the greater weight of the overall system and the 3-
part, rigid outer roof skin. Special gauges, fixtures and special tools are needed for
professional servicing of the RHT.
The RHT consists of the roof and the rear modules. Extremely precise gauges are needed
to position the modules correctly with respect to one another and with respect to the body.
Because of the very tight tolerances that result from the vehicle construction (from
±
0.3 mm to
±
0.7 mm) and because of the distance to be bridged (from the cowl panel to
the consoles in the rear), the gauges have to satisfy very high standards. The material used
is aluminium to keep the weight of the gauges to a minimum.
The gauges may only be used in the temperature range +10
°
C to +40
°
C. This ensures that
the above tolerances are not exceeded. This means that each time they are used, the
gauges first have to be conditioned to the above temperature range at the point of use.
To prevent the gauges from being damaged, the respective repair instructions must be
followed!
A precise examination of the gauges is necessary if any damage is detected or suspected.
Damage could occur in the event of incorrect fitting, application, storage or transport.
The vehicle must be standing with its wheels on a level workshop floor for all adjustment
work on the RHT.
The high total weight of the roof module (approx. 90 kg) and the restricted accessibility of
the assembly points make a lifting device necessary for removal and installation.
Procedure:
Different special tools packages are available for the different applications.

The plastic templates for special tools package 1.2 will be supplied during the next
