Fault "106 MUX" in EGS
E34, E36 / M51
Complaint:
-
Fault "106 MUX" in Electronic transmission control (EGS)
-
Automatic transmission control unit switches to limp-home programme
The fault can arise under two different driving conditions.
1.
Fault arises at engine speed n = 3000 - 3600 rpm, either when shifting speed range or
when driving at a constant speed.
2.
Fault only arises when vehicle is at standstill, either when the ignition is ON and the
engine is not running or when starting and the engine is running at a speed close to
idle.
Cause:
To 1.
Protruding converter fastening bolts or "wobbling" of the flywheel lead to incorrect
sensing of the engine speed. For this reason, the DDE control unit briefly transfers
implausible load information (injection rate signal) to the EGS control unit.
To 2.
Implausibilities resulting from noise signal harmonics from the speed and start-of-
injection sensors.
Vehicles affected:
To fault pattern 1:
325tds A and 525tds A from the start of series production up to 12/1995
To fault pattern 2:
525tds A from the start of series production up to 12/1994
Procedure:
Fault pattern for 1. and 2.: Visual inspection of flywheel to determine version
Applicable to 325tds A and 525tds A:
Through the opening for the converter bolts, check whether there are only holes in the
flywheel (old version) or holes and slots (new version). - See figure 1 -
