Oxygen sensor - thermoshock
E32, E34 / M30
Complaint:
Rough or hunting idling and/or bucking when driving.
"Check Engine" lamp comes on in US vehicles.
Cause:
An increasing amount of water collects in the exhaust system due to unfavourable driving
conditions such as frequent stop-and-go driving, long periods of idling and a lot of short-
distance driving. This water builds up through e.g.:
-
separation of the water content in the fuel during cold starting
-
as a product of the combustion process
-
through condensing of the air moisture in the exhaust as the exhaust system cools
down.
The ceramic sensor body that is heated immediately after the engine is started and quickly
achieves a high temperature is damaged by this cold condensate (thermoshock).
The following fault codes may be stored in the DME fault memory:
DME M1.1:
"10" - Oxygen-sensor control and/or
"28" - Oxygen sensor
DME M1.3.:
"10" - Oxygen-sensor integrator and/or
"28" - Oxygen-sensor signal
Affected vehicles:
E32, E34 with M30 engine
Manufacturing period: March 1, 1986 - March 31, 1994
Remedy:
If the oxygen sensor malfunctions repeatedly, not only the oxygen sensor must be
replaced, but a Service solution must be retrofitted that has the following effect:
constant delay of oxygen-sensor heating until 30 seconds after the engine is started, across
the entire engine temperature range.
Procedure:
1)
Replace the oxygen sensor and clear the DME fault memory.
2)
Retrofit a Service solution consisting of an "oxygen-sensor-heater control unit" and
adapter cable.
Enclosure 1 contains a circuit diagram that depicts how to install the Service solution
in the electronics box.

Disconnect the negative terminal from the vehicle battery.

Remove the ABS control unit from the electronics box.

Starting at the electronics box, push the free end of the cable set through the small,
unused lower hole of the grommet, inserting it so far into the engine compartment until
the corrugated conduit of the cable set protrudes from the grommet by the same
amount on both sides.

Fit the relay socket of the cable set between the B+ terminal and the relay of the
electric fuel pump (EKP).
