The auxiliary heater will not switch off or switches on unexpectedly
E39 / M47, M57
Complaint:
The auxiliary heater does not switch off correctly when the vehicle is shut down, or it
switches on unexpectedly after it has been shut down.
Note:
The noise of the auxiliary heater running for up to 3 minutes after it is switched off does
not constitute a malfunction. It is rather a functionally designed and intended "run-on" of
the auxiliary heater. In such cases, a repair would not remedy the situation and must not
be performed.
Cause:
Fault in the systems networking of the auxiliary heater and the IHKA control panel.
Affected
vehicles:
E39 with M47 or M57 engine
Manufacturing period: from the start of series production
Procedure:
General note on the auxiliary heater "run-on"
The auxiliary heater system's programmed "run-on" mode after the vehicle is shut down is
explained as follows:
A fleece mat is used in the auxiliary heater to assist the formation of the combustion
mixture. The fleece must be "burned free" of combustion residue. This happens at regular
intervals, both during a journey and after the vehicle has been shut down.
The free-burning process may last for up to 1 minute. Subsequently, the combustion air
blower will continue running for up to 2 minutes. The resulting noise can be heard when the
vehicle has been shut down.
This functionally designed and intended "run-on" of the auxiliary heater should be explained
to the customer.
What to do in case of a fault
For certain vehicles from the manufacturing period from August 1998 until April 1999, the
following Technical Campaigns were published.
Technical Campaign "00642401/0799: Replacing operating element for air-conditioning
system or automatic air conditioning system - E39 with M57 engine and voice input system
(option 620)",
Technical Campaign "00642501/1099: Replacing operating element for air-conditioning
system or automatic air conditioning system - E39 with M57 engine, without voice input
system (option 620)",
In case of complaint, check whether either of the above Technical Campaigns apply to the
vehicle. If applicable, work off the relevant campaign.
If the vehicle is not affected by either of these Technical Campaigns, or if these have
already been conducted, or if an M47 engine is installed, install the "auxiliary heater repair
kit" in case of complaint. This will ensure that the power supply to the auxiliary heater is
interrupted if the functionally designed and intended run-on time is exceeded.
This action only applies to vehicles without independent heating. This action must not be
performed on vehicles with independent heating.
