Faults in navigation system operating software 

E38, E39 US with navigation system

Complaint: 

The following fault only occurs in conjunction with road map CDs covering more than one
state:

-

If an attempt is made to enter a destination in the "Address and destination memory"
menu, and this destination is in a different state, overlapping windows appear on the
screen (after the other state has been entered) and a proper place name input is no
longer possible. Pressing the "Menu" key allows all other functions to be carried out.

Cause: 

Operating software fault:

-

V 1.6 of navigation system "Mk2" (from 09/1997).

Affected
vehicles:

E38, E39 with navigation system (option 609)
Manufacturing period: 09/1997 (operating software loaded at factory)

Remedy: 

On vehicles with operating software "V 1.6", update the software to "V 1.7" with the new
CD.

Note:

The new CD "BMW Navigation V 0.5" contains both operating software 
"V 7.3" for the current navigation system and Version "V 1.7" for the new system.
The navigation computer automatically recognises the required version when the
software is loaded.

Procedure:

Only in the event of a customer complaint or when exchanging the navigation computer
is the updated navigation system operating software to be loaded.

1. 

Turn the ignition key to position 1 (terminal "R" on) and wait until the navigation system
is ready for operation.

Note: 
Do not conduct diagnosis during the following sequence. Make sure that the power
supply is stable, i.e. do not switch on any electrical loads.

2. 

Remove the map CD from the navigation computer.

3. 

Insert the CD with the operating software V 0.5.

4. 

System 2 (Mk2) from V 1.7:
After a few seconds, a menu of notes on the loading procedure and a bar which is
gradually colored in appear on the on-board monitor. 

When the loading process is complete, the message 
"Software has been successfully loaded" will appear.

5. 

Now remove the operating software CD before confirming the end of the loading
process by pressing the right-hand rotating/press button on the on-board monitor.
"OK" appears in the display.

6. 

Reinsert the map CD into the navigation computer.

Note: 
It is no longer necessary to recalibrate the navigation system.
