Unauthorized exchange of basic module
E38, E39
Situation:
On a large proportion of basic modules which have been replaced and returned through the
warranty channels, no fault can be determined when the parts are examined.
The following points are apparent:
1.
A large number of basic modules come from vehicles manufactured in the period
August 1998 to November 1998. These vehicles are affected by Technical Campaign
00613401/0399 "Recode basic module". The basic modules returned have not been
recoded, despite the customer complaining of a "flat battery".
2.
Basic modules have also been replaced in vehicles manufactured prior to August
1998 or after November 1998 due to a flat battery. The basic modules of these
vehicles are not affected by the fault pattern described in the above Technical
Campaign.
3.
For many basic modules which have been replaced and returned through warranty
channels, the customer complaint and the reason for the replacement are not known.
The reason cannot be appreciated even after the parts have been examined. The test
code printout is frequently not sent in with the damaged part, depriving us of an
important source of information.
Affected
vehicles:
E38, E39
Manufacturing period: from the start of series production
Procedure:
On vehicles which are affected by Technical Campaign 00613401/0399 "Recode basic
module", the basic module must be recoded. Replacing the basic module is not
permissible.
If a basic module is replaced due to a customer complaint, it must be ensured that
diagnosis is conducted using either DIS or MoDiC and that no fault is present in the
periphery of the basic module.
In uncertain cases, or if a complaint occurs sporadically, the technical consultant at your
subsidiary or importer should be contacted before replacing the basic module.
In all cases, a precise description of the customer complaint and the reason for replacing
the basic module should be entered on the warranty parts tag. Before replacing the basic
module, the test code must be stored, printed out and sent in together with the warranty
parts tag.
Procedure for storing and printing out the test code:
1.
Select a random subsystem (e.g. central locking) in the diagnosis program for the
central body electronics ZKE.
2.
Select "3 Service Functions" in the subsystem.
3.
In the Service Functions, select "1 Test code".
4.
Store the test code by pressing the on-screen button
"R Store test code".
5.
After completing the diagnosis, print out the diagnosis report.
The stored test code will be printed out on the diagnosis report.
