Torsional oscillations in steering wheel without brake application

E39 / M47, M52TU, M54, M57 with option 0216 "Servotronic"

Complaint:

Heavy vibrations/torsional oscillations in steering wheel at 80 - 120 km/h (50 - 75 mph) 
without brake application.

Cause:

Wheel imbalance transmitted to the steering wheel due to the sensitivity of the Servotronic
steering gear.

Affected
vehicles:

E39 with power-assisted rack and pinion steering (ZHL) and option 0216 "Servotronic"
Production period 09/1999 to 07/2001

Remedy:

In the event of a customer complaint:

- 

Balance wheels, match if necessary.

- 

If the complaint cannot be rectified by balancing / matching the wheels, the Servotronic
steering gear must be replaced.

Procedure:

1. 

Remove front wheels.

Please refer to Repair Instructions 36 10 300.

2. 

Balance wheels, match if necessary.

Proceed by following to the letter the following Repair Instructions and Service
Information bulletins - the success of the repair is otherwise jeopardised.

•

Service Information bulletin 36 01 95 (945), especially 
Point 5 "Irregular running and its causes" and 
Point 6 "Tyre fitting".

3. 

Test drive the vehicle.

4. 

If the complaint cannot be rectified by the actions described above, the Servotronic
steering gear must be replaced.

Please refer to Repair Instructions 32 13 061.
