Heavy smoke from the auxiliary heater

E38, E39, M57 or M67

Complaint:

After the auxiliary or independent heater has been in operation for a number of minutes,
exhaust fumes from the auxiliary heater intermittently cause excessive smoke. This occurs
suddenly and in a large volume and is noticeable when the vehicle is stationary by a
definite cloud of smoke in the area of the driver's door. 

This fault pattern is clearly different from the occurrence of small amounts of exhaust
fumes in regular operation or during the run-on phase of the auxiliary heater, which are
caused by the design of the system. Such systematic exhaust fumes do not justify repair
actions.

Cause:

Faulty settings in the auxiliary heater control unit can intermittently give rise to unfavorable
values for the ratio of combustion air. This causes the auxiliary heater to switch off due to
overenrichment which in turn causes a sudden release of exhaust fumes. 

Affected vehicles:

E38, E39, M57 or M67 
Manufacturing period: start of series production until 18 October 2002

Procedure:

In case of customer complaint, check whether the customer's description exactly matches
the above fault pattern. Only then is the auxiliary heater to be replaced.

Please refer to Repair Instructions 64 12 052, "Replacing complete auxiliary heater".

No warranty reimbursement will be granted for auxiliary heaters which have been
exchanged without authorisation and which indicate no fault in the damaged part
examination.
